The HK government is currently working on a DMCA for Hong Kong that is being lead by industry feedback without any significant balance from content creators and private citizens. If we don't give feedback now, we will be stuck with less rights than we have now and it will be our own fault. This impacts both companies and individuals.

What can you do?

You can find the whole thing here, including some responses to the last round of consultation:

The simple answer is: you don't.

Unless your product or service has no human touchpoints, then your product or service *is* the UX - and you should be thinking about this from day one.

This talk is part rant, part workshop/roundtable.

The rant will cover:

  • why UX is not a verb a brief history of UX
  • a brief overview of some lean UX techniques.

The workshop/roundtable will cover:

  • you talking about your startup, how it's user centred (or not)
  • some quick wins to make it more user centred

As usual, the meeting is at BootHK, 19/f, 231-233 Queen's Road East in Wan Chai and will start at 7:30pm.

Fri, 03 Feb 2012 04:19:00 -0800 Register Now for Social Media Week: Pitch Night on Feb 13 at Bisous #SMWHK http://blog.startupshk.com/register-now-for-social-media-week-pitch-nigh http://blog.startupshk.com/register-now-for-social-media-week-pitch-nigh

Pitchnight

It's the 2nd Social Media Week in Hong Kong, and to follow up on our super sucessful event last year we're doing it again: PITCH NIGHT @ BISOUS ON FEBRUARY 13.

From the first one we did this time last year, to the Echelon Pitch Day at Bloomberg to the Pitch Night at Hyde, StartupsHK has provided the Hong Kong community with opportunities to showcase their startups to a very excited audience in hopes to bring more attention to the local tech startup scene.

This time its a more managebale 5 start-ups pitching in 5 minutes each, to a panel of 5 judges Shark Tank style.

The panel includes:

  • Andrew Teoh, Managing Director of Ameba Capital which looks at early stage tech startups in China and Asia. Ameba has already made numerous investments in 2011 and is looking to grow its portfolio in 2012.
  • David Wang, Managing Director of Golden Summit Ventures a Hong Kong and Slicon Valley based Venture Capital firm which invests in the consumer, games, internet and mobile sectors.
  • Derek Kwik, Founding Partner of BraveSoldier Ventures. His background combines over 20 years of venture capital, business strategy, finance and operational experience in technology manufacturing

Rackspace is sponsoring prizes as well as Nokia.

The 5 startups we have pitching are:

  • Aftership
  • RealLifeConnect
  • Beyond Six
  • Popzeen
  • Openbar

The judges can and will make investments LIVE on the floor if they like the idea - and the event WILL be livestreamed - so stay tuned to @StartupsHK for the links or follow the #SMWHK hashtag on Twitter.

So if you haven't registered you need to do so because this event sold out super fast last year and there will be no tickets at the door.

StartupsHK is just organzing the pitches, the registration and event production is by Social Media Week - so we can't help you "get in" if its sold out - so please register at this link now.

If you haven't yet please follow us on Twitter here and join our LinkedIn group here.

See you on Feb. 13th!

"Launched in October of last year at TechCrunch Disrupt in Beijing, 8 Securities is the first online investing tool in Hong Kong. It combines social elements (like tracking your favorite traders) with a trading portal where you can select markets, trading tools, news, and research.

"Change does not come until the conventional way of doing things is disrupted for the better… and that is our mission," the company notes.""

While 8Securities is based and founded in HK, most American media cannot tell the difference between HK and China even if they had a cup of noodles poured on them in the MTR.

But I digress...

This is great for Mikaal Abdulla founder of 8Securities as well as bringing a spotlight onto the Hong Kong start-up scene.

Check out the other start-ups at the story linked above.

Sounds like a cool title for a sci-fi movie?

In fact this is reality and we have Dr. Cory "I am not a robot" Kidd coming in to share about his Hong Kong-based robotics start-up Intuituive Automata and how he built his start-up and working at MIT Media Lab, working in Artifical Intelligence and human robot interaction  - this is the "do not miss" Startup Monday for February so make sure you book it in your calendar and make sure you come early as we will lock the door at 7:30 on the dot.

As with all Startup Mondays:

  • Date: Monday, February 6, 2012
  • Time: 7:30pm-9:30pm
  • Venue: BootHK
  • Admission: Free
  • RSVP: Post your Twitter handle and name below. Limited space so you must RSVP.
  • BYOB or BYOP (pizza)
  • Twitter hashtag: #SUMHK
  • If it's your first time at #SUMHK: you have to fight!

Cory's bio below:

Kidd Biography
Dr. Cory Kidd is the founder and CEO of Intuitive Automata, a health care technology company that creates interactive coaches to help people address the challenges of making lasting change.  Dr. Kidd received his M.S. and Ph.D. at the MIT Media Lab in human-robot interaction, a new field combining robotics, artificial intelligence, and psychology, among other disciplines.  While there, he conducted studies that showed the advantages of using a physical robot over screen-based interactions.  He also conducted an extensive study showing the efficacy of his weight loss coach in helping people to diet and did work in local nursing homes with robotic companions for elderly individuals.

Prior to his work at MIT, Dr. Kidd received his BS in Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  While there he was a part of the Aware Home Research Initiative, a focused research effort that was looking for ways to allow older people to live in their homes longer.  He managed the research project and taught courses on related technologies.

Intuitive Automata introduction

Intuitive Automata creates interactive coaches for helping people better manage long-term health issues.  We address one of the biggest challenges in health care: getting patients to adhere to a medical or health regimen.  The technology is based on research by Dr. Kidd, our founder and CEO, that showed the efficacy of interactive robots at engaging a person over time and successfully conveying information to them.  He is joined by Bill McCord, our CTO who has over a decade of experience in commercial software development and has created the software on the robot and the back end.  Erica Young, our Chief Design Officer, is an industrial designer who has spent the last ten years developing products for the US market and overseeing their manufacture in China.

Our platform has been shown to be significantly more effective at engaging a patient over an extended period of time, allowing them to better adhere to a treatment regimen as compared to web, computer, and mobile applications.  The physical nature of our product combined with the advanced interaction algorithms that are drawn from psychology, medicine, and human-robot interaction are proven to be more engaging and effective at conveying information to the patient than screen-based systems.

The first product we are launching targets the US $68 billion weight loss market and is a coach that is designed to help an individual lose and keep off weight.  You can see a quick overview of Autom, our coach, at http://myautom.com/about.html and learn more about the company athttp://intuitiveautomata.com

Intuitive Automata is preparing to enter manufacturing in the fall of 2011 in preparation for delivering first products to customers in early 2012.  Our first customers include some of the largest US health insurance companies, hospital and provider networks, and employers.  These initial customers, combined with our extensive press attention, has given us an excellent position from which to launch our product.

Autom™

Autom™ is an interactive weight loss coach that has been shown to be more effective at keeping a dieter engaged than any existing weight loss program.  Using proprietary AI algorithms that create a daily interactive conversation between the coach and the user, Autom™ is able to create and maintain a long-term relationship.

Developed by Intuitive Automata, the theories behind Autom™ were created by Dr. Cory Kidd as part of his Ph.D. at the MIT Media Lab.  He also worked closely with a leading medical weight loss expert, Dr. Caroline Apovian of Boston University Medical Center's Nutrition and Weight Management Clinic, who remains medical advisor to the company.

“We are going to change the world”. If ever there was a cliche at a technology start-up pitch, this has to be it.  Having gone through the roller coaster ride of raising investment, I learned an important lesson. Anyone that asks you how you are going to build a $1 billion dollar business and how you are going to change the world is a dinosaur. It is astonishing how many VCs continue to view investments through this lens. Furthermore, it is amazing how entrepreneurs are forced to pander to it. Sure, I understand the VC investing model and that they will make five to ten investments a year and hope that one delivers big.  Those that deliver big are few and far between and you probably won’t be one of them. But don’t let that stop you from building a great product and business because you can. Don’t waste your precious time and energy trying to back fill a story that shows 100 million customers with your totally creative way to drive revenue (that deep down you know is nonsense). Instead, focus on these four clear objectives and frame your business plan around this. First, build a great founding and operating team. Second, build an amazing product that delivers what it says on the box with early customer feedback to prove it.  Simply, make your customers happy. Third, set your sights to break-even and not a day beyond. Finally, ensure you are building a scalable business model and product from day one. If you achieve these objectives you will be in a great position to build a profitable growth business.  Remember, it will take one customer at a time to determine your success.

Investment funds like Dave McClure’s 500 start-ups get it. The reality is that a successful exits for most ambitious and innovative companies will come in seven or eight digits and not the ten we find in $1,000,000,000. I assure you, if your product is so big and so groundbreaking, then you are not knocking on doors for investment. It will be other way around. Since no VCs are knocking on your door, don’t waste another minute of your time reaching for the moon. Instead, build your product and prove your customers want it. Do everything in your power to delight them with brilliant design and engineering. Change your customer’s world and the rest will follow. If you do that, you will find the right investors with a realistic world view. You probably won’t change the world, but like the great Steve Jobs said, try to make a dent in it.

Good luck, I am pulling for you.

Mon, 05 Dec 2011 06:22:00 -0800 Never Give up, Never Surrender by @Jason http://blog.startupshk.com/never-give-up-neversurrender-by-jason http://blog.startupshk.com/never-give-up-neversurrender-by-jason

By Jason Calacanis

A year ago SNS (social network service) Path.com launched as the anti-Facebook. With odd product choices like a 50-person friend limit and an iPhone-only release, the service created a lot of discussion.

I became a huge fan of the privacy-first Path because, as many of you know, I've had a slight problem with the way in which Facebook has flipped user privacy, with opting folks in to features they would never embrace.

Back to Path. The service was considered dead. It didn't help optics with users like myself that the company launched a second app called With.me in June. I figured with that launch Path co-founder and CEO Dave Morin acknowledged he had given up on the Path app on some level.

Last week I woke up to 10 friend requests on Path. My immediate thought? Oh, Path must have fixed their email server and I've gotten some backup requests. This happens from time to time with all startups.

Techmeme quickly alerted me to a new version of the software and upon loading, I noticed that my favorite SNS, which had been in a coma for over six months, was alive and running around the track!

Path 2.0 is filled with amazing little goodies, like the ability to say you've gone to sleep or woken up. This feature serves no real function other than it's fun and it gives you something to remember to do with the program. When you put Path to sleep it gives you a nice stand up clock -- which is a $0.99 purchase in the App store.  Someone at Path was paying attention with that feature.

Oh yeah, you get to put a billboard up at the top of your feed. And you get to search a database of songs to say what you're listening to.

It also opts you into "neighborhood sharing" if you don't read the permission pop-up carefully. Imagine you called in sick today and you really were in Vegas? Oops!

Anyway, putting aside that slip-up, the product is a redesigned delight, and now my feed is absolutely filled with activity!

From zero to hero in one product release.

This proves the basic tenant of startups: STARTING IS EASY, FINISHING IS HARD.

Like the corny catchphrase from the awesome "Star Trek" parody film "Galaxy Quest":

Never gave up, never surrendered!

Which seems to be clearly based on the Winston Churchill speech:

"Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never - -in nothing, great or small, large or petty -- never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy."

If you're running a startup that's an absolute disaster. If your product sucks and the early adopters have left. If you've been beat up and dragged through the mud, and if the world has counted you out, consider yourself blessed!

The precursor to kicking ass is getting your ass kicked.

Congratulations to the Path.com team on brushing themselves off and creating, because in life you're either creating or you're waiting.

After running a couple of weekend startup incubators under the BootUP! name, we hooked up with the global Startup Weekend organization to do another event. The first two being held in BootHK limited the available size to around 20, but we were able to score a great venue at the M-Lab facilities in Kowloon Tong, giving us room for 50 partcipants. This also helped with reaching into the local college community, since it is a part of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University school of design.

Startup Weekend HK Crowd

SWHK F2011 Participants, Judges, and Fans

Seven teams built startups from Friday night until Sunday evening. The ideas ranged from helping consumers manage loyalty cards to preparing your digital assets for when you die. Similarly, participants varied in their backgrounds and gave a good mix of business, development, and design experts to put together some great prototypes.

The quality of the event and participants was awesome. We has so much help from mentors, judges, and PolyU and it made it a great event that shows really what we can do here in HK.

We have two of our group members - Salvador De La Barrera of Flipter and Leon Ho of Steply - coming out to show off photos and talk about their experience at this year's Techcrunch Disrupt in Beijing and see what they learned, who they met and if you should join it next year.

As with all Startup Mondays:

  • Time: 7:30pm-9:30pm
  • Venue: BootHK
  • Admission: Free
  • BYOB or BYOP (pizza)
  • Twitter hashtag: #SUMHK
  • If it's your first time at #SUMHK: you have to fight!

Tue, 25 Oct 2011 10:03:00 -0700 Jason Li's (@Jasonli) Art Notes from the Beyond Entrepreneurship Forum in Hong Kong http://blog.startupshk.com/jason-lis-jasonli-art-notes-from-the-beyond-e http://blog.startupshk.com/jason-lis-jasonli-art-notes-from-the-beyond-e

The PolyU took these great photos of Jason's artwork for us to share here.

The first sheets are on a panel Casey Lau did with Greg Sung and Kelly Yu - 2 entreprenuers here in Hong Kong - the second was covering the Geeks on a Plane panel and the 3rd was about what is happening here in HK now and what we want to see in ways of support for start-ups.
